EPATH’s 3rd Summer School:

Transgender health: Interdisciplinary approaches

(July 8 – 10, 2026)

EPATH is organizing its 3rd Summer School from July 8 – 10, 2026, at Ghent University in Ghent, Belgium.

The Summer School focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to supporting the social, mental and physical well-being of transgender and gender-diverse people. Although scientific interest in transgender health has grown significantly in recent decades, academic curricula across relevant disciplines still lack dedicated, in-depth attention to transgender health. In addition, it is essential that transgender health is approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, with attention to both minors and adults.

Through advanced plenary keynote lectures delivered by experts in transgender health from a variety of scientific backgrounds, participants will gain access to state-of-the-art insights from each field. All participants will take part in interactive discussions designed to deepen their understanding of the complementary, and sometimes contrasting, perspectives across disciplines. Required readings (two texts per keynote lecture) provide a strong introduction to each topic. In the afternoon, participants may choose from several interdisciplinary masterclasses, featuring selected case studies supported by relevant literature or research proposals prepared by participants.

To learn more about what to expect, you can visit the web page of the 2nd Summer School.

Registration for the 3rd Summer School will start on January 14, 2026. The application deadline is February 15, 2026. For any questions, please contact contact@epath.eu.

Format
  • Each day begins with one or two plenary lectures delivered by leading researchers in the field of transgender health, followed by discussions with participants.
  • In the afternoon, interdisciplinary masterclasses are held, during which participants present case studies (practical exercises), relevant background literature, and/or research proposals. Through interactive discussion and both expert and peer feedback, we aim to support and strengthen participants’ work. Each session is coordinated by experts in the session’s specific topic. Participants are required to submit a research proposal or case study through an online abstract submission system, after which submissions will undergo blind peer review by the Summer School’s scientific committee. Selected abstracts will be presented orally during the masterclasses.
  • The program also includes tête-à-tête mentoring sessions, offering participants from different disciplines the opportunity to book individual supervision with experts in the field of transgender health. These sessions may be used to discuss research projects or clinical case studies. Participants will send their materials to the expert in advance so that the expert can provide meaningful feedback during this one-on-one meeting. Tête-à-tête sessions may take place online or in person. A list of available experts will be provided beforehand so participants can choose whom they would like to meet with.
Criteria for participation

Students and clinicians must be fluent in English and are required to submit a motivation letter along with a signed letter of reference from their institution (PDF format). These documents must be included with the application. The application form also requires you to upload a research proposal or case study you wish to present. All submissions will undergo peer review by the Summer School’s scientific committee. To view an example of a case study, click here.

Full attendance at the Summer School is required for participation.

If necessary, the scientific committee will select participants. Enrolment is limited to 72 participants, with preference given to disciplinary and geographical diversity (maximum of four participants per country) and with priority admission for application from Europe. Ten spots are reserved for PhD students from Flemish/Belgian Universities.

Only after your participation has been approved you will receive an invitation to complete the financial registration.

Please note: You do not need to b a PhD student to apply. Clinicians, researchers, other professionals, and BA and MA students are all encouraged to submit an application.
